@chu@climatejustice.social I have the Classical and Medieval Chinese dictionary extension in my Pleco, which focuses on Tang and earlier, and one of its definitions for 包 is "measure word for round items, e.g. fruit". I reckon that meaning evolved quite naturally into "bun" without any need for external influence.
